LOMA ALTA RANCH Loma Alta Ranch is located on the western border of the Texas Hill Country, halfway between Del Rio and Sonora. This is the intersection of three biological regions—the Edwards Plateau, Chihuahuan Desert and Rio Grande Plain brushland—which creates a landscape of outstanding beauty and diversity supporting a wide variety of native and exotic game species.
The terrain on the ranch varies from large wide valleys covered with live oak, hackberry, mesquite, cedar and wild persimon trees to flat topped hills and rugged canyons with escarpment oaks, cedar and native brush cover.
Wildlife on the ranch includes native whitetail deer, free ranging exotics (axis deer, audad, fallow deer), feral hogs, Rio Grande turkey, quail and dove. The ranch has an abundance of water troughs to support the game and is leased for cattle grazing insuring an agricultural tax exemption for all property owners. In exchange for the grass lease the rancher leasing the property maintains the water lines and troughs providing water for the game and cattle.
AREA ATTRACTIONS Lake Amistad (Rough Canyon Marina 30 minutes from Loma Alta Ranch) 67,000 acres of water along 540 miles of U.S. shoreline - this is Lake Amistad, one of the largest, clearest lakes in Texas! Lake Amistad is considered by many to be Del Rio's biggest draw, offering acres of blue glass on the Texas/Mexico border. The lake is part of Amistad Recreation Area, managed by the National Park Service. It is fed by the Pecos, Rio Grande, and Devil's River; limestone deposits and solid earth lend the water an extraordinary clarity and deep turquoise quality.
Amistad Recreation Area attracts people internationally not just for boating and house boating, but also camping, water-skiing and wakeboarding, nature hikes, and especially fishing. The lake holds several variations of bass, catfish, sunfish, and gar, not to mention various other fish species. Lake Amistad is known as one of the best bass lakes in the country; with warm weather nine months out of the year, Amistad can be fished when other lakes have little to offer. Many of the best examples of prehistoric Native American petroglyphs in North America are local, with a few, such as the Parida and Panther caves, accessible by boat.
Ciudad Acuña (45 minutes from Loma Alta Ranch) Del Rio's sister city, directly across the Mexico - U. S. border, is the best border city in Mexico. Unique merchandise, wonderful food and a welcoming atmosphere await you. Just across the International Bridge, Ciudad Acuña's charm begins at Calle Hidalgo (Hidalgo Street), the main avenue in the shopping district. This area offers world-famous cuisine, leather goods, gift shops, and dancing at nightclubs and discos.
